Longleat vs Horningsham

After an interesting game of substitution last year, Longleat decided to make a serious and somewhat deceitful attempt to win this time. Step one had been planned as far back as the spring when Jack Crossman and David Ware were taken on to the grounds staff for the summer. Step two involved recruiting Sam Lock at short notice to replace Paul Grugeon who was given a free transfer back to Horningsham (step three). There was a little confusion at the start of the match as to numbers; Horningsham batting first with ten men but Longleat initially fielding twelve, later possibly thirteen with the late arrival of Ryan Hockley. Eventually Horningsham accepted a handicap of one and the game proceeded at 10 vs 11. Special rules for the day were: retire at 30 and 3 overs per bowler.

Horningsham managed a total of 163. After a shaky start, a solid performance by Callum Widdows and Stuart Hyde, retiring on 32 and 33 respectively, supported by Tom Oborne (21), David O’Connor (15), Tom Evans (13) and Finn Gunning (12) produced a total of 163 on the board – 176 in the book.
 
Longleat’s reply owed much to its hijacked Horningsham players. Sam Lock top scored on 40 with Dave Hewins on 37, each returning to the crease for a second innings after retirement, despite our efforts to keep the tail end in! The most impressive performance came from Jack Crossman who scored 24. Longleat made a valiant effort and reached 137 at the close.

A much closer match this time, we must expect an even tougher battle next year as Tommy Parker has threatened to play.
